im thinking of buying the asus eee pc 701, i know theres newer versions out with bigger screen, but i only want it when im in bed as i already have a desktop. is it a good netbook

I have one, and I use it exactly the way you plan to. For web browsing while lying in bed or slumped on a couch, it works pretty well. If you hold it to your eyes the same distance as you hold a book, the 7 inch screen isn’t as hard to read as some people fear.
For that purpose, I don’t think it can be beat.
You wouldn’t want to work on it, since the keys are quite small. But you already have a desktop, so you probably won’t.
If you just need to access the internet, email and don’t need a lot of storage then it should be fine; but remember it has a 7 inch screen so you will have to scroll around most internet pages. If you can get it at a discount, that’s fine too – but the Asus EEE 901 has a 8.9 inch screen and better resolution and a little more storage. It’s still small enough to fit in small bags and larger pockets – very portable.
